Pop and Television

I rarely watch local television shows. My idea of local pop culture has been mainly categorized on the level that it is with our government, second hand quality, plagiarized and bastardized by imbeciles of head honchos, producers and hosts of local network television shows that seems to spoon-feed you with craps that western countries has been throwing at us for years. Damn, whatever happened to intelligent viewing? And just when I thought that maybe, just maybe, Filipinos aren’t really influenced by aesthetics, consumerisms and bad tastes? Well, SonsOfBitches, Sunday night TV just went crazy for a whole hour of mediocrity and bull-crapping.
I may not know how pop culture and television really work, other than the fact that I took it as a course in college and well having a communications degree. Maybe, I’m not really one of ‘em qualified scholars who can actually discuss about how mass media has facilitated our country’s fastest moral decay. Okay, what I’m really talking about is how awful last Sunday’s result of Philippine Idol was. It confirms what has become our manic inclination to pop culture drama and bad TV. Last Saturday’s show had bad sound system, and Ryan Agoncillo’s hosting had its fumble every now and then but all through out the sow did well for its first live broadcast of the performance. The contestants performed and the judges were pretty much sugar coating their comments for the singers.
Here were the judge’s selections from the performers;
Pilita Corales – I like them all!
Francis Magalona – Ramirr, Drae, Robert, Gian Carlo.
Ryan Cayabyab – Gian Carlo, Drae, Robert, Ramirr.
Okay, the only reason why I watched PI is beacuse Ramirr Grepo is there. He’s a friend and a batch mate from college and I’ve heard this guy sing a lot of times, and in all those times he rocked and belted on Dream Theatre, Skid Row and Robbie William’s songs just to name a few. I say what the hell are the voters thinking? Ryan Cayabyab even pointed out that he’s the guy to beat, and in all of the other performers no one really topped him off. I gotta give the producers a hand though on the cliffhanger of the night, with Ramirr and that pakyute Atenista, but the voters went to the artista look what else. I swear the top 4 of the male performers all looked alike. Anyway, when all is done I guess we’ll just have to do better and vote for Ramirr to get in the finals. Actually, it also happens in American Idol so to comfort my sad ass the fan base really has the say on the competition.
I don’t mean to sound like a self proclaimed moral judge on this type of things but in all fairness I think we could do far better next time.
